71st Venice International Film Festival Opens
The 71st Venice Film Festival opened Wednesday, bringing 11 days of high art and Hollywood glamour to the city. Twenty films are competing for the coveted Golden Lion prize - 19 of them world premieres.
This year's festival opens with the world premiere of Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu's twisted comedy Birdman.
The aim of the Festival is to raise awareness and promote the various aspects of international cinema in all its forms: as art, entertainment and as an industry, in a spirit of freedom and dialogue. The Festival also organizes retrospectives and tributes to major figures as a contribution towards a better understanding of the history of cinema.
