Chris Pine To Star In 'Dungeons and Dragons' Movie

Hollywoodreporter.com: Chris Pine is getting ready to roll some D20s.

The actor, who is gearing up to return to the world of superheroes with Wonder Woman 1984, is in talks to star in Paramount and eOne's long-gestating and big-budget Dungeons & Dragons movie.

Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley — the duo behind New Line's sleeper hit Game Night— are set to direct the feature that is based on the popular role-playing fantasy game. Goldstein and Daley also wrote the latest version of the script, based on a previous draft by Michael Gilio.

While plot details are being kept under the chainmail but the game is known for its wargames, treasure hunts, campaigns, camaraderie, and reversals of fortune, all in a setting that combines humans, elves, orcs, and wizards.  The game famously uses multi-sided dice in gameplay and is overseen by a host known as the Dungeon Master.

The role-playing game from Hasbro was previously adapted in 2000 by New Line for a film starring Jeremy Irons. In recent years, the property has been at the center of a legal battle over its film rights, with a 2015 settlement appearing to have paved the way for Warner Bros. to make a movie that at one time had Ansel Elgort in early talks to star. However, the rights eventually hit the trail for Paramount, which has a production and distribution deal with Hasbro.

Hasbro/eOne and Paramount are jointly producing and financing, with eOne distributing in the UK and Canada, and Paramount distributing rest of world. Jeremy Latcham is producing for eOne, which was acquired by Hasbro in 2019.

Pine, repped by CAA, John Carrabino and Gendler & Kelly, is currently in production on Olivia Wilde's 1950s-set thriller Don't Worry Darling, being made by New Line.
