DEWA Urges Customers To limit The Use Of Electrical Appliances

Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) has launched its annual Let’s Make this Summer Green campaign to raise awareness about the importance of adopting sustainable practices and rational consumption, to preserve natural resources and reduce Dubai’s carbon footprint. The campaign incorporates tips that contribute to reducing energy use during the summer. These include encouraging consumers to limit their use of electrical appliances during peak-load hours from 12-6pm.

DEWA noted that energy demand is higher in the summer, especially during peak-load hours. This results in increasing energy production and using more fuel. In turn, this releases more carbon emissions. The campaign aims to encourage people to use, in the morning or evening outside peak-load hours, high-energy electrical appliances such as washing machines, water heaters, electric ovens, air conditioners, and irons. Such practices help all members of society to contribute to saving energy and protecting the environment.

“DEWA attaches great importance to the rational use of energy, in its efforts to achieve the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050, which was launched by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, to establish a sustainable model of energy conservation that can be exported to the whole world. Our goal is to become the city with the lowest carbon footprint in the world by 2050. These efforts also support the Dubai Integrated Energy Strategy to reduce energy demand by 30% by 2030. DEWA adopts a clear strategy to raise awareness about the importance of the sensible use of energy. This involves all customers in DEWA’s efforts to protect the environment and preserve natural resources, to achieve sustainable development. We do this through various environmental programmes and initiatives, and awareness campaigns. These campaigns have achieved significant savings over the past years, and proved that all members of society can contribute to supporting national and global efforts to combat climate change and global warming, by adopting positive practices at work and at home,” said HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD & CEO of DEWA.

“The ultimate goal of these initiatives and campaigns is to encourage energy conservation amongst all members of society, and promote the sensible use of resources to become a social culture and daily practice. Launching this annual campaign is part of our ongoing efforts to consolidate environmental sustainability and the sustainable development of Dubai and the UAE. This is done by rationalising the use of electricity, water, and natural resources, and urging people to adopt a conscious and responsible way of life to ensure the sustainability of natural resources, for generations to come,” added Al Tayer “DEWA effectively contributes to environmental protection and sustainable development. We regularly organise conservation campaigns and awareness programmes throughout the year as part of our efforts to promote a culture of conservation among all members of society. Each one of us can make a difference by rationally using electricity and water, and making this behaviour a daily practice. Through this campaign, we encourage customers to schedule the use of high-energy appliances in the morning or evening if this is possible, away from the peak-load hours of 12-6pm,” said Khawla Al Mehairi, Vice President of Marketing & Corporate Communications at DEWA.

DEWA’s programmes and initiatives between 2009 and 2016 have made considerable savings in electricity and water. DEWA’s customers saved over 1.54 TW/h of electricity and 6.2 billion gallons of water, worth over AED 957 million. The generated savings resulted in offsetting around 831,000 tonnes of carbon emissions. DEWA’s programmes and initiatives managed to reduce electricity use by 19% and water by 28% in the residential sector. The commercial sector reduced
