My Old Lady (2014)
An American inherits an apartment in Paris that comes with an unexpected resident.
Kline plays a bitter, alcoholic man in late middle age, a failed writer named Mathias, who discovers that his father has left him an apartment in Paris.
But when he goes to check it out, he discovers it’s been leased on the “viager” arrangement, where older property owners “sell” their house but are allowed to live in it until their death and collect rent from the person who has bought it.
He discovers that Maggie Smith, playing a woman well into her 90s and in perfect health, is living there and has no intention of leaving. Revelations are gradually revealed that make what starts as a simple comedic story acquire substantial dramatic heft.
