Dubai Police Prepares Ramadan Cannons to Signal Crescent Sighting
Dubai Police: Dubai Police's Ramadan cannons are set to announce the sighting of the holy month's crescent in Dubai from the Nazwa area, along with six other locations, in cooperation with the authorities responsible for moon-sighting for Ramadan.
The Force has formed dedicated teams at each selected site, in cooperation with strategic partners, to deploy stationary iftar cannons across six major areas in the emirate that witness high residential and tourist activity: JBR, Burj Khalifa, Damac Hills, Expo City Dubai (Al Wasl Plaza), Dubai Festival City, and Vida Creek Harbour Hotel.
Dubai Police has also prepared 17 locations for the mobile cannon, which will begin firing at the start of Ramadan from Dubai Gardens, followed by One&Only Zabeel, Umm Suqeim Majlis, JBR, Bab Al Shams Hotel, Al Meydan Hotel, Global Village, Atlantis Hotel, Nad Al Sheba Majlis, Mirdif, Burj Khalifa, Lehbab, Al Khawaneej Majlis, Boulevard Marina, Al Warqa, Vida Creek Harbour, and finally Al Barsha Park.
The Ramadan cannon is a cherished national tradition that Dubai Police proudly preserves and develops, bringing it to communities across the emirate. These iftar cannon events receive special attention during Ramadan for their role in reviving Arab and Islamic customs and culture within the UAE community.
It is worth noting that Dubai Police is keen to maintain its annual tradition — more than 60 years— of alerting fasting residents and citizens to the time of iftar and sharing in their joy, giving the holy month a distinctive character unlike any other. Each cannon fires 35 rounds during Ramadan and Eid: two rounds when the Ramadan crescent is confirmed, one round each evening throughout the month to signal iftar, one round to mark the first day of Eid Al Fitr, and two rounds immediately after the Eid prayer in celebration.
