Kevin the Baby Porcupine was Discovered During Annual Stocktake

Eagle-eyed zoo keepers only spotted baby porcupine Kevin during an annual stock take but he'll be he's a welcome surprise for the German zoo who is already describing him as one of their biggest stars.

The prickly rodent currently weighs just three pounds and was spotted by staff at Hagenbgack Zoo in Germany who had no idea that the North American porcupine had been born until they found him in the enclosure.

He's just a baby now which means his spike are soft and fluffy but North American porcupines grow to be among the biggest in the world - and the spikes will get much stronger and sharper.

He was named after zoo-keeper Kevin Surmilo, 34, who found the cub and takes no chances with his spikes, wearing thick leather gloves as he presented to cub to the adoring crowds.

Kevin the porcupine is the first of his kind to be born at Hagenback, who describes him as the star of their new inventory which also includes a walrus cub named Thor in a total of 1,859 inhabitants from 210 species.
